What Exercise Can Do For You

Staying physically active helps prevent disease and helps improve your health. It helps you maintain muscle mass, maintain your strength, bones & metabolism. Did you know that if you do not strength train you lose 5 pounds of muscle for each decade over 30? That means 20 pounds of muscle loss by age 70, leaving you weak and frail.
What kind of activities improve health? There are four types of exercises that reap great health benefits:
Endurance or Cardiovascular exercises help keep your heart and lungs healthy. They give you more stamina to do the things that you would like to do. You should do 20-30 minutes of aerobic, cardiovascular exercise 3-4 times a week
Strength or resistance exercises build muscle and increase your metabolism to help keep blood sugar and weight in check. They also help keep your bones strong and help you move. You should get strength training 3 times a week too.
Flexibility exercises help keep your body limber by stretching your muscles and ligaments and help prevent injuries and reduce the risk of falls.
Balance exercises help prevent falls as well and should be done on a regular basis as well.
What ever you do, take the first step to a healthier you by making exercise a permanent habit. Start a level that is good for you and gradually work your way up to the recommended heart rate and frequency of exercise. You will see improvement after 6-10 weeks.
Some people are reluctant to start because they are afraid it will be too strenuous. Remember that you don’t have to do strenuous exercise to gain health benefits, even moderate exercises are effective. The trick is to start low and slow and work at a rate that is good for you.
